Tyler is a former naval officer in the US Navy. After a catastrophic automobile accident (caused by a drunk driver) which cost Tyler a leg, he became an instructor at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Tyler also began doing consulting work for the Navy. In 1984, Tyler was tasked by Jack Ryan with identifying the construction variations in Red October. This eventually led Tyler to determine that these variations were housing a new, silent propulsion system.
