Natalia Ramius is a character that appears in the novel, The Hunt for Red October. She is the wife of Marko Ramius.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Natalia is the wife of Soviet Union submarine commander Marko Ramius. She was later struck with ovarian cancer, a condition that was exacerbated by the doctor's incompetence and the state of the Soviet health care system, resulting in her death. Marko was deeply affected by her passing. Moreover, because the doctor responsible was the son of a Politburo member, the doctor could not be punished.

Natalia's untimely death, combined with Ramius' long-standing dissatisfaction with the callousness of the Soviet establishment towards its sailors and also Ramius' fear of the destabilizing effect the Red October would have on world affairs, ultimately exhausts Ramius' tolerance for the failings of the Soviet system and leads him to defect in 1984.
