Biography[]

Jack Ryan was attending the London School of Economics in 2001 during the 9/11 attacks. He soon abandoned his pursuit of his PH.D. and commissioned in the United States Marine Corps as a Second Lieutenant. During his deployed to Afghanistan, his helicopter was shot down with an RPG, severely injuring his spine. Despite this, Ryan pull two men from the wreckage. Once friendly forces arrived, Ryan was transported to the NATO trauma center in Kandahar to undergo a foraminotomy. Due the quick medical response to his injury, Ryan was able to retain the use of his legs. Ryan returned to the United States and started a lengthy recovery at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. It was here that he met a third year medical student named Cathy Muller who helped him learn to walk again.

Almost a year later, Ryan was able to walk again and started a romantic relationship with Mueller. Before being fully discharged from rehab, Ryan was approached by Commander Thomas Harper of the U.S. Navy. Harper thanked Ryan for his service and praised him for his dissertation on Liquidity Events in Post-Soviet Markets and the three reports he made in the USMC concerning traffic patterns in and around the Saabir Khan Bridge. Ryan questioned how Harper could know that information, only for Harper to whisper that he was in the CIA. Later, during an evening job, Ryan noticed Harper watching him from a nearby building. Convinced that Harper had not been lying about being with the CIA, Ryan asks him why he was there. Harper stated that he wanted to send Ryan back to school to obtain his doctorate and then join the CIA as an analyst in Financial Intelligence. Seeing this as a way to continue serving his country, Ryan accepted.

A decade later in 2013, Ryan has now been engaged to Muller since 2010 but agency protocol has prevented him from revealing his employment with the CIA to her as they are not married. Ryan was covertly employed as a compliance officer at a private bank on Wall Street, tasked with auditing suspicious financial transactions that indicate terrorist activity. When the Russian Federation loses a key vote before the United Nations and the markets do not respond in the expected manner, Ryan discovers that billions of dollars possessed by Russian organizations have disappeared. The majority of these funds belong to Russian businessman Viktor Cherevin.

Ryan reports this information to Harper by giving a dossier to one of Harper's men at a movie theater. Ryan tells the man that Harper will need someone to travel to Moscow to investigate, only to be told that Harper will want him to be the one to do it as he is the only one who understand the financial data. Ryan declines, stating that he is only an analyst but this excuse fails. A short time later, Muller discovers the movie stamp and grows suspicious that Ryan is having an affair.

Ryan later informs his boss at the bank, Rob Behringer, of the hidden accounts in order to secure a cover for his travel to Moscow under the guise of auditing Cherevin to ensure that he is not defrauding the bank. Behringer approves but advises Ryan to be careful not to ruin the bank's partnership deal with Cherevin. Back at his apartment, Ryan informs Muller of his business trip to Moscow, only to be confronted by Muller about the movie stamp and her fears that he is having an affair. Ryan denies this, claiming to her that he had seen the movie alone. Ryan denies having an affair and promises to meet Muller in Paris after his trip.

Upon arriving in Moscow, Ryan is greeted by Embee Deng who states that Cherevin Group sent him to be Ryan's bodyguard. Shortly after arriving at his hotel however, Deng attempts to kill Ryan but is overpowered and drowned in the hotel bathtub. Distressed at taking his first life, Ryan sends an SOS and is instructed to meet his contact at a nearby park bench in Staraya Square. Fearing for his life, Ryan then tell Muller that he will not be able to make the trip to Paris. After reaching Staraya Square, Ryan is surprised to learn that his contact is Harper himself. During their debrief, Ryan explains how Cherevin's shadow investments could make the United States vulnerable to complete financial collapse following a staged terrorist attack. While Russia's economy would also collapse, Ryan surmises that unlike the United States, Russia's economy would be able to quickly recover.

At his meeting with Cherevin the next day, Ryan is told that the problem company and all of its assets have been sold, thus preventing Ryan's audit. To obtain more information, Ryan convinces Cherevin to have dinner with him at a restaurant across the street later that night. He is surprised to learn from Cherevin, however, that his "wife" has arrived at his hotel and is told by Cherevin that he cannot wait to meet her. Returning to his hotel room, Ryan finds Muller waiting for him there with his gun. Unable to hide his employment with the CIA any longer, Ryan breaks protocol and reveals the truth to Muller. Afterwards, Harper improvises and instructs Muller to attend dinner so as to not arouse suspicion with Cherevin, despite Ryan's protests.

Ryan and Muller meet Cherevin at an upscale restaurant across the street from Cherevin's office. Over dinner, Ryan causes a scene and purposely insults Muller. Excusing himself, he gains access to Cherevin's office with Cherevin's keycard which one of Harper's agents had pick-pocketed earlier while Muller continues to distract Cherevin. After obtaining a copy of Cherevin's harddrive, Ryan manages to narrowly escape Cherevin's security detail, reunite with Muller, and return to Harper. Ryan and the CIA discover Cherevin has secretly propped up the Chinese and Japanese economies for years, leaving the entire global economy vulnerable to collapse. Ryan reveals that the terrorist attack is set to take place the next day somewhere in the United States and that once done, Cherevin will collapse the global economy. Before they can act further, however, their hideout is attacked by Cherevin and his men, resulting in Muller being taken hostage. Following a short car chase through the streets of Moscow, Ryan manages to rescue Muller and incapacitate Cherevin.

Aboard the flight back to the United States, Ryan and the CIA learn that Cherevin had falsified the death certificate of his son, Aleksandr Borovsky, and that he had been placed int he U.S. as a child to be a sleeper agent. Ryan locates Borovsky's hideout at a farm in Pennsylvania through the farms owner, Dr. Mikhail Yureyovich, who had previously served with Cherevin in Afghanistan. Following a raid of the hideout by the FBI, evidence is found that Borovsky has disguised a vehicle as a police response vehicle. Through bank accounts used by Borovsky's foster parents, Ryan learns that Borovsky's target is Wall Street in downtown Manhattan.

Immediately after arriving in New York City, Ryan and Harper travel to Wall Street where police are on high alert. While searching for Borovsky, Ryan notices a police car drive by with smeared paint, confirming it to be Borovsky. Ryan then commandeers a motorcycle from a bank coworker named Ted Hefferman and pursues Borovsky. After Ryan catches up and engages in a physical confrontation with Aleksandr underneath Wall Street, he discovers a bomb in the rear of the vehicle. Unable to defuse it, he hijacks the vehicle and crashes it into the East River, jumping out moments before the bomb detonates, killing Borovsky. With the economic crisis averted, Ryan and Harper are later called to the White House to brief the President.
