Alan Trent is a character that appears in several Tom Clancy novels. Trent is the chairman of the U.S. House Select Committee on Intelligence. Sometime in the early 1980s, Trent came out as homosexual.

Biography[]

The Hunt for Red October[]

Cardinal of the Kremlin[]

1986, Someone from CIA has told Trent that a romantic friend he met in the USSR, while on a trip there, was sentenced to the gulag for "anti-social" behavior. Trent agrees to help Jack Ryan appear as if Ryan is in trouble with the Securities & Exchange Commission, while the 2 are at a Washington cocktail party. The ensuing fight allows Ryan to meet the KGB Chairman alone later in Moscow.

The Sum of All Fears[]

In 1990, he was the Chairman of the U.S. House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. A known anti-Japan sentimentalist, he oversaw Operation Niikata.

Debt of Honor[]

By 1995, Trent had continued to be a vocal critic of the Japanese. He later became instrumental in the swift passage of the Trade Reform Act, which would later cause war between the United States and Japan.
